Business Development
Partnerships
Cooperation as a way to development
SIFI’s Business Development work revolves around Research and Development partnerships, co-development projects, in-licensing and out-licensing agreements, and strategic shareholdings.
The role of SIFI as a partner of choice is reflected in the collaboration agreements currently in place with prominent companies such as BD, Fidia, InSite Vision, Janssen Cilag, OcuSense, Otsuka, Schering-Plough, Senju.
Open Innovation
Capitalizing on/ Exploiting innovation, no matter where it is generated
SIFI adopts a specific approach to Business Development based on Open Innovation. This concept represents a marked shift away from the traditional closed model of Research and Development, based exclusively on the company’s internal resources.
SIFI’s strategic view of collaboration has led the company to engage in several partnership agreements with highly reputed Research Centres, located in Italy and abroad and not solely operating in the EyeCare sector.
International expansion
Company’s steady growth and qualitative development
Today, an ever more marked geographic diversification is, for our company, a strategic objective and a clear commitment.
For SIFI, expanding internationally means exporting a brand that is synonymous with specialisation and tradition in ophthalmology, quality and innovation, ethics and professionalism, scientific education and proximity to physicians and patients, high medical and technological contents and commitment to social responsibility.
SIFI adopts different internationalization strategies for each of the three areas that make up its business, given their distinct competitive dynamics and business models.
In the pharmaceutical sector, SIFI favours growth by steps, aiming, in the initial phase,to enter into selected markets belonging to developing geographic areas, such as Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Latin America, where possible by means of a direct presence. In a second phase, SIFI intends to develop a stronger presence in the more developed pharmaceutical markets, such as the USA and Western Europe, mainly through licensing agreements and partnerships.
Today, SIFI has a leading position in Romania with Oftafarma – first foreign subsidiary in terms of turnover, with an increase of 35% in 2007 – and it has laid the foundations for rapid growth in Russia and Turkey, where SIFI already has a significant presence through exclusive distributors.
The development plans for Latin America has included the constitution in 2007 of a fully owned subsidiary, Laboratorios SIFI de México, which, within the next five years, aims to become one of the main players in the local ophthalmic pharmaceutical sector. In the surgical sector, foreign expansion will be triggered by the kick-of the Waterfall project, through which SIFI aims to gain a leading competitive position in the European market for the treatment of cataract.
Finally, SIFI products focused on diagnostic, since its foundation, have considered the whole world as their reference market. The company aims to achieve a significant competitive position within the most technologically developed markets, such as the USA, Western Europe and Japan, leveraging a very high level of innovation combined with the protection of intellectual property developed by our own Research and Development department.
