Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is an ultra-rare disease, affecting only 1-4 in a million people. Therefore, not many people and physicians know about this disease. Yet you will always remember that one patient with AK you have come across very vividly.
An AK infection brings extreme pain, light sensitivity, and a challenge to confirm the diagnosis quickly, leaving people walking around for weeks with the debilitating effects of the disease.
We at SIFI are convinced that creating awareness of the disease and its symptoms, will help early recognition and initiation of treatment, potentially preventing medical urgencies.
Please have a look at Juliette’s experience with AK, as it is one that has made a big impact on us.
